What makes a beautiful face?

This is a very controversial issue as it is very subjective.

As we all know, "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"!

We can learn a lot from the the rich and famous.  Every day, there are hundreds and thousands of photos posted on newspapers across town.

Keeping in mind that some photos might have been air brushed, we can still discuss some of the facial features, of which, can be easily treated or untreated on the faces of our favourite stars.

Let's try...

Our own Jacki Weaver!  Pay attention to her right eyebrow.  These are her natural eyebrows.  Forehead muscles, frontalis, is responsible for lifting eyebrows.  However, if the one side of the forehead muscle is stronger than the other side, it will create uneven or asymmetrical eyebrows.

Have a look at yourself in the mirror with your eyebrows at rest and now, try raising them up together.  Is one side higher than the other side.  Quite often, you can tell that one side is stronger than the other by the number of wrinkles/lines on one side.  The stronger it is, the lines are more noticeable.

Recommended Treatment: wrinkle relaxant for the forehead muscles.  Must treat both sides but having more treatment dose on her right than her left.  Treat higher than lower forehead muscles to create an even more natural look.  Remember, you can adjust the dosage as you go.

Alternatively, changing her hair style with more fringe on her right instead on the left side.

This is an interesting photo of Nicole Kidman.  Everytime I perform wrinkle relaxant treatment, my clients always say "I don't want to look like Nicole Kidman"!  Surely, Nicole is rated as one of the most beautiful faces on the red carpet.  Why don't we want to look like Nicole Kidman?

Here is another photo of Nicole, pay attention to the position of her eyebrows.  May be it is the way the photo was taken.  In this photo, there is minimal distance between the start of the eyebrows and the upper eye lids.  This gives a very sharp, narrow and "eagle" look.  If you examine all her recent photos, she hardly has any lines on her forehead because the forehead muscles are not in use.  Hence, not much of eyebrow raiser muscles are working.

The forehead muscle, frontalis, is the eyebrow raiser or lifter.  The corrigators, supercilli and procerus muscles, also known as the frown muscles, pull the eyebrows down and towards the nose.

All the muscles work together in a "see-saw" fashion.  If you weaken one muscle group, the opposite muscles will work harder due to the lack of opposing effect of the other muscles.  In Nicole's case, her forehead muscles are no longer pulling her eyebrows up, therefore, the other muscles are pulling her eyebrows down and towards the nose.

Recommended treatment:  If a client wishes to have the forehead treated and already has the sharp and narrow look with their eyebrows, we strongly suggest the client to have the frown muscles treated as well.  This is to avoid the "Nicole" look.   This is more of an issue if a client has a large amount of units treated on the forehead.

Remember to start low and go slow with the treatments.

This is an interesting photo of Kelly Osbourne.  She has beautiful skin, the only thing to point out is that she has a set of very prominent jaw muscles.  This gives a "square"-ish type of look.  This type of jaw is commonly found in some Asian countries such as in Korean women.  Jaw surgery is very common in Korea.

Rather than going under the knife, one can reshape the jaw by using wrinkle relaxant to the jaw muscles.  Apart from temporarily reducing wrinkle lines, the benefit of wrinkle relaxant is relaxing the muscles and therefore, causing temporary reduction of the size of these overused muscles.  This phenomenon is also known as atrophy.

It's like going to the gym!  If you exercise your biceps arm muscles everyday, it will get bigger - hypertrophy.  When you stop going to the gym, these muscles will go back to their original size - atrophy.

Recommended treatment: moderate to large amount of wrinkle relaxant to the masseter (jaw) muscles on each side every three months.  Some clients also found that when they lose 5-10% of their body weight, they will also lose some of the adipose tissue around the masseter jaw muscles)

The EXTRA benefit for this is also reducing jaw pain commonly found in clients who grind their teeth.  I have clients referred by dentists for the treatment of jaw pain due to persistent night time teeth-grinding.

The down side of this treatment is that clients might found it slightly difficult to chew a piece of tough steak.

This is a photo of Edie Falco, star of Nurse Jackie.  There are some signs of normal aging: loss of skin tone, volume and texture.  Note that there are some lines around her forehead, eyes/crows feet, smile lines, chin and tear troughs.

Apart from using good skin care products, there are several things that can soften her look.  I am not talking about any drastic changes.  I believe women should look their age and lines represent a person's character and personality.  Erasing all lines is therefore disastrous and yes, people will know you have had "something" done.

Recommended treatment: small amount of wrinkle relaxants to her forehead, crows (around the corners of eye), chin.  May be small layers of soft tissue fillers to her mid cheek to reduce the progression of the development of nasolabial (lines between nose and mouth) and marionette (jowls) lines.  One can also consider some lighter soft tissue fillers around her tear trough (under the eyes) areas.

The important thing to note here is that I am trying to soften the lines, I am not trying to pump her up with lots of fillers or removing all the lines from the face.  Softening will provide a more natural and refreshed look.

Helen Mirren is one of my favourite stars.  In my opinion, she looks absolutely beautiful and stunning.  There is not much of cosmetic treatments I would recommend for her.  Sound surprising?  Well, she looks absolutely fantastic for her age - turning 66 this year.

Although she has the signs of normal aging, however, she ages quite well.  This is demonstrated by having all the right lines around the right places.  These lines reinforce her the character, personality, confidence and maturity.

Recommended treatments: good skin care, facials, balanced diet and exercises!!

What lessons have we learnt from the stars?

1) Do your research.  Get as many opinions as possible.

2) Start low go slow - you can always come back for more treatments (depending on your budget).

3) Stick to your budget, if not enough, save up.  No point having half the recommended treatment that will not give you the desired effect.

4) Talk to your cosmetic practitioner: discussion about what you want and listen to their advice.  IF they don't recommend it or not feel confident to deliver what you want, don't worry, get another opinion.

5) There are limitations to cosmetic treatments.  There is no point asking a cosmetic physician (who do not do surgeries) for a surgical face lift.

6) Be realistic about your age and accept that lines are not always your enemies.

7) Please do not over do it.  Subtle and gentle treatment goes a long way.  Having too much is a disaster.

8) Don't forget your inner beauty.  Keep those balanced diet and exercises going.  Keep smiling.
