Spider Veins
direct visual sclerotherapy
Please note that the following does not replace
the advice from your medical doctor.
If you have questions, please use the online
contact form.
Q: What do you mean by direct visual sclerotherapy?
A: Multiple small injections are made to the spider veins. Dr Louisa only performs this in the lower legs. She may also recommend and order an ultrasound for you prior to having this procedure. Sometimes, clients may have underlying varicose veins or vascular disease and therefore, this will need to be sorted prior to treating spider veins.
Direct visual means not ultrasound guided, but by direct vision with the aid of a pair of magnification lenses. Small amount of medicine is injected to the spider veins. This medicine acts as a sclerosant, and therefore, causing inflammation and irritating the walls of the spider veins.
After treatment, you must wear compression stockings for minimum of five days in order to maintain the "closure" of these veins.
Q: Is it painful?
A: The medicine may cause slight discomfort and Dr Louisa recommends using numbing cream at least 45 minutes prior to the procedure. You may wish to apply a large or generous amount of cream prior to coming in and wrapping the area with glad wrap.
Q: What do I expect after the treatment?
A: Generally, this procedure is quite tolerable but often, clients may experience itch and burning sensation around the sites. You can take an antihistamine such as hay fever medicine to reduce the inflammation and itch.
Please do not scratch or rub the area too much as it will intensify the itch and inflammation.
Q: Can I exercise afterwards?
A: YES, gentle exercises only. Dr Louisa recommends clients to walk at least 30 minutes with the compression stockings after the procedure. Please avoid intensive training exercises and swimming for one week. You should come back for a follow up appointment, usually at 2-4 weeks after the initial treatment.
Q: How soon will I see results?
A: Some clients only need one treatment but often, 2-4 sessions. This depends on the location, type of veins, and how many there are around the sites. We recommend you to wait for about three weeks before the next treatment.
Please allow 2-3 weeks recovery before going on holidays or prior to any major events.
